Ar'Jany Martha is aiming to revive his football career with Telstar.
The player came through the Ajax academy and made it to the first team, but found opportunities limited under manager John van 't Schip and was sent back to Jong Ajax. After more than a hundred matches for the reserves, he left for Beerschot in Belgium in the summer of 2024. That move lasted one season before Rotherham United signed him. In England's League One, he says he learned about 'fighting football'. "The football world is hard," Martha stated.
He arrived in Velsen-Zouth on the final day of the transfer window. "The chance to get a lot of minutes," is what he cites as the main reason. Martha previously played as a left-back at Ajax but is being used as an attacker at Telstar. He made his debut in the away match against FC Twente, playing eight minutes. Against sc Heerenveen, he remained on the bench for the full match. He is in the squad again for Sunday's match against AZ Alkmaar, which kicks off at 14:30.
Martha is happy to be back in the Netherlands. He mentions being able to see his family and friends again, something that was difficult abroad. About Telstar, he says, "It's a really fun club." He expects to feature more in the coming period. "There's more to come. I want to get enough minutes."
Telstar currently sit twelfth in the Eredivisie with five points from six matches. The team drew 0-0 at Heerenveen last week and lost 1-0 to FC Twente before that. The full standings are available online. Sunday's opponent, AZ, are in second place. The last meeting between the two sides, in March, was a 2-1 win for AZ. The upcoming schedule, including the match in Alkmaar, can be found on the fixtures page. Martha hopes to earn his first start for Telstar there.
