Telstar has appointed Dion Malone as team manager, marking an important step for the club from Velzen-Zuid. The 37-year-old Malone is ending his career as a professional footballer but will remain connected to Telstar. He has played professionally for eighteen years, including stints at Almere City, ADO Den Haag, NAC Breda, and Telstar. Last season, he played eleven matches for the Witte Leeuwen in the Eredivisie. Malone also participated in the semi-finals of the World Cup qualifying playoffs with the Surinamese national team.
Malone's current contract runs until June 30, 2026, but he has decided not to continue as a player. In his new role as team manager, he will serve as the link between the players and the coaching staff at Telstar. He will fulfill this role under the new coach Henk Brugge, who has taken over from Antony Correia, who transferred to FC Utrecht.
Since late March, Malone has not played due to 'passport gate', and it is unclear whether this contributed to his decision to retire. Telstar has also appointed Harmen Kuperus as the new goalkeeper coach. Kuperus was the goalkeeper coach at Ajax last season and played for Telstar between 2005 and 2006 and in 2010. He ended his professional playing career in 2013.
With the appointments of Malone and Kuperus, Telstar hopes to develop further and return stronger in the Eredivisie. The club looks forward to a new season with fresh energy and experience in the staff.
