Telstar secured a 2-1 victory over FC Volendam in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday afternoon. The Eredivisie side came from a goal down to win with late strikes from Nigel Ogidi Nwankwo and Rojendro Oudsten.
The first half at FC Volendam's home ground ended goalless. Telstar goalkeeper Ronald Koeman was called into action to deny headers from Jaïr Haakmat and a shot from Mohammed Belfqih. At the other end, Roy Steur saved a cross from Prince Aning and an effort from Fofin Turay. An early goal from Kayden Wolff for the hosts was ruled out for offside.
Daan Reiziger replaced Koeman in goal at half-time. FC Volendam manager Erwin van de Looi made a triple substitution on the hour mark. It was Mohammed Belfqih who broke the deadlock in the 68th minute, receiving the ball on the edge of the box, cutting inside and firing into the top corner.
Telstar's response was immediate. Two minutes later, Nigel Ogidi Nwankwo equalised after a corner was punched clear by Steur, with the defender collecting the ball and scoring. The turnaround was complete in the 78th minute. Rojendro Oudsten dribbled from defence into the penalty area and finished calmly for 1-2. FC Volendam fielded eight homegrown players in the second half but could not find an equaliser.
This friendly win comes as Telstar sit 13th in the Eredivisie with five points from seven games. The team is without a win in its last five competitive matches. The next league fixture is at home against 17th-placed ADO Den Haag on 11 October. Telstar's full squad is preparing for that match. The current league standings show their position.
In the first half, Telstar striker Serigne Deme had to be substituted injured in the 31st minute, replaced by Miguel Opoku. For FC Volendam, players like Enzo Pestana, Just Huisman and Mika van der Horst came on. Telstar brought on Nökkvi Thorisson for Fabiano Rust in the 61st minute. Telstar's starting lineup featured Koeman in goal, with Gerald Alders, Oudsten, Nwankwo and Prince Aning in defence. The midfield consisted of Noach Shenkman, Harrie Kuster and Isaiah Ahmed, with Emirhan Demircan and Rust on the wings and Fofin Turay up front. The friendly victory provides a positive boost ahead of the next competitive outing.
