In a pre-season friendly match, Telstar faced VfL Wolfsburg in Germany and ended up with a narrow loss of 3-1. The match was significant as it represented the first time for Telstar to play on German soil since 1987 and only their third away game since 2017.
The match began poorly for Telstar, who missed an early opportunity when Rui Mendes, a player previously known for his accuracy with VV Katwijk, shot wide from ten meters. Abdelnour Soualhia also failed to convert a free-kick attempt, sending the ball past the post.
Wolfsburg Takes Control
Wolfsburg quickly turned the tables and dominated the match in the first half. Within 25 minutes, the German team scored three goals. First, Robert Glatzel beat Telstar's goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr. with a shot from the near corner. Shortly after, Alessio Besio found the far post with a well-executed curling effort.
Around the 30-minute mark, Wolfsburg extended their lead to 3-0. Despite defensive efforts by Telstar, they struggled to contain Besio's precise shots.
Telstar's Moment of Glory
Telstar managed to score their first goal in Germany just before halftime when Emirhan Demircan broke through and set up Soufiane Hetli for a powerful shot that found the bottom corner. However, despite this lone goal, Wolfsburg maintained their dominance.
The match served as Telstar's final pre-season test before their opening Eredivisie match against NEC on August 8th at 16:30 in Nijmegen. The team will be looking to build momentum from this experience heading into the new season.
Team Lineup: Koeman Jr.; Alders (Ahmed/46), Soualhia, Peersman, Hardeveld; Owusu, Rossen (Shenkman/46), Brouwer; Mendes (Demircan/55), Seedorf, Hetli (Aning/80)
